A properly functioning horn in your Tri-Five Chevy might be one of the more tedious tasks to fix. Over the years, different manufacturers have tried to improve upon the original design of the horn with little to no luck. Today we will go over the best method when installing a horn kit and steering wheel onto a steering column with an original style 15” steering wheel from American Retro.
When installing the horn and original style steering wheel onto the Premium Tilt Column, start by undoing the horn relay. Next, remove the turn signal cam from the back of the steering wheel and the horn cover. Place the spring over the steering wheel shaft.
Once the spring is in place, put the horn cam assembly in place. You will notice that the horn pin is much longer than needed in most cases.
This pin will need to be trimmed down so that there is only about an ⅛” of the pin showing. Trim the pin down as needed so that the pin doesn’t make constant contact but is still long enough to make contact once the horn is pressed.
Once the horn cam assembly in place, put the metal spacer over the shaft.
Put the steering wheel over the horn cam assembly and tighten the cent bolt.
Place the metal horn ring in the steering wheel and horn bushing and tighten the three screws in place.
Before everything is fully tightened and installed, reinsert the horn relay and test the horn to make sure it is functioning properly.
Now that everything is where you want it to be, and functioning the way it should, remove the horn relay for the final time. Then, remove the horn cap and get a small tube of blue loctite. Remove one of the three bushing screws at a time and apply a little blue loctite. Make sure to follow this step on all three screws for the horn bushing. Install the horn cap back on and reinsert the horn relay for the final time and your horn is now complete. Enjoy cruising around in your Tri-Five knowing your horn will work in case you ever need it. We will see you on the road!
