Printed in The American Tri-Five magazine in Volume 9 : Issue 8
Daily window use has usually worn your old fur channels to the point where the windows are loose and may even rattle. We're going to go over the installation of this crucial part of installing new glass or updating your Tri-Five. Each kit of our “fuzzies” contains all of the parts you need to completely replace your window channels. Kits come with all the correct contours and lengths. Let's get started!
Getting Ready for Installation
Remove old staples by twisting up end and cutting off. If the original fur is no longer present look for remains of old staples or staple holes for more accurate location of fur strips.
Installation of Fur Strips
(3/8” Flat Dusters)
(This step is Hardtop, Convertible, Nomad ONLY)
On the front doors no fur strip was used on the interior side, a roller DAN-14790 was used. Some did not have any fur strip on either side, rollers were used DAN-14790 on the interior side and DAN-2082 on the exterior side. On the vehicles with fur, on the exterior door side place new fur strip which is located approximately 1-1/4” from the top edge of the door belt moulding. Use the original staples holes to help you location correct positioning. The Fur strip was positioned low so no contact with the chrome window frame will accrue when window is rolled down.
(Back to all passenger cars) Hold fur and drill a 5/64” (.078) hole at one end, and progress towards the other end. Space holes about 6” apart. Using screws supplied in the kit to attach fur strip.
On the rear quarter window, place new fur strips on both the garnish moulding and outer body trim, insuring that the stainless beading is even with the top just above the edge.
Hold fur and drill a 5/64” (.078) hole at one end, and progress towards the other end. Space holes closer on curved components. Using screws supplied to attach fur strip.
CAUTION: DO NOT start at each end and work towards the center. Drill each hole one at a time and install screw. This ensures more accurate alignment.
Twist heads of screws with screwdriver to sink it in fur pile. The head of the screw should draw into the pile enough so it becomes invisible.
Installation of Division Bar (Non-Flexible U-Channel)
The complete vent window assembly must be removed from the door. This is also a good time to replace the vent window seal, DAN-565/DAN-565A.
The division bar channel originally came in two pieces. The Division Bar Stops, DAN-147 should be replaced at this time. Drill out four rivets holding the original fur channel. This will allow the top part of the assembly to come apart. Install the new Division Bar using hardware included in the screw kit.
We haven't forgotten about the moleskin! That's covered in our next article.
Much like the Hardtop, Convertible and Nomad, the Sedans & Wagons have an extra step to the installation of the flexible channel provided. This is and additional step after all the other steps are complete.
Before you start to install flexible channel make sure the stainless beads will slide back and forth this will allow the channel to bend without kinking. You can make small templates of the rounded corners of the glass out of piece of thin plywood of similar thickness.
On the doors slide the channel into window opening. Now start in the corner by division bar, slide flexible channel in drill through channel and into door frame install screw, this will help hold it. Brush adhesive in the Body Channel and sides of Flexible Channel. Side the channel up into the back corner (use template if you made them).
On the rear door glass install 20" Flex channel first then slide the 60" Flexible channel in the glass opening. Make sure the channel is positioned correctly, see Diagram below for example. Do the same process as the doors to attach to body. For positive mounting, use small screws in corners will help see diagram below.
